Everything you need to know about the Ultrasonic method of NDT

NDT INSPECTION COMPANY IN HAIL

Ultrasonic nondestructive testing is also known as ultrasonic NDT (UT), is performed by the experts of an NDT company. It is a method of characterizing the internal structure of a test piece through the use high frequency of sound waves. It uses short pulse waves of high-frequency power even more than human hearing. It is the best method for welding the most useful characteristics of ultrasonic testing due to its ability to describe the exact position of a discontinuity in a weld.

How does it work?

High-frequency sound waves are very directional, and they will travel through a medium until they combat with a boundary with another medium at which point they reflect to their source. The transducer is passed over the object being inspected, which is typically coupled to the object by gel, water.

Types of ultrasonic testing

Ultrasonic testing can be categorized into two types:

Contact ultrasonic testing – It is typically used in site inspection accessibility portability. Contact ultrasonic inspection is performed where the parts to be tested are large, irregular in shape, or difficult to transport. UT can be used for a wide range of wall thickness and material types.

Immersing ultrasonic testing – It can be performed in the laboratory as well as the factory. It is best suited to curve the components, ultrasonic technique development, and complex geometries. In this method, the material is submerged in water, which acts as a couplant in place of the gel used for the contact of ultrasound. Complex surfaces are hard to cover with contact probes so, immersion UT generally uses the pulse-echo method. Advantages of ultrasonic testing

The ultrasonic procedure of Nondestructive testing is the most common method of testing. It has various advantages like high sensitivity that allows for detection of very small flaws, high penetration power, able to estimate shape, size nature of defects, etc.
